What is a Google Penalty?

Google Penguin & Panda are both independent algorithms and in order to remove a Google penalty it is important that you first understand the differences.

Introduction & Guide to Google Penalties Video

This is a short video which we made several years ago to help explain exactly what it’s all about. The core reasons why Google penalties happen & how they are removed haven’t changed since Google Penguin 4.0 despite now being part of the core Google algorithm as of September 23rd 2016.

Google Panda Algorithm

Panda focuses on content, ensuring that Google returns the best content to users. This algorithm looks at both onsite and offsite content in citations and links pointing to your website. If your website has any of these issues then it could be affected by Panda:

  • Technical onsite SEO issues resulting in duplicate pages/domains
  • Automatically generated content/pages
  • Content taken from other websites
  • Low quality pages written specifically for SEO and not for users

Google Penguin Algorithm

Penguin focuses on filtering and devaluing low quality or manipulative links which influence rankings by passing Page Rank. If enough links are found pointing to a website which it believes to be manipulative, it then triggers the second part of Penguin which automatically pulls down the rankings for the specific keywords or phrases which it believes have had attempted manipulation. Unless you remove these links, and/or disavow them using the Google Disavow Tool then you cannot recover from an algorithmic Penguin issue.

(This is often referred to as a ‘Penguin Penalty’, which strictly speaking it isn’t)

Manual Google Penalties

There are many different Google Penalties which result from different activities. If your site has a manual action taken against it then you must take action to rectify the issue. When the necessary work is carried out, a reconsideration request* is made and the manual action revoked.

*It is possible to remove a manual action without reconsideration, as they can expire if the correct work is carried out.
